Cape Breton Island's strong culture and heritage has naturally influenced both her style and love of dance. Mary was raised in the midst of an ardent musical generation where all members of a community had an opportunity to interact socially, and therefore, music, song and dance passed easily from one generation to the next. Mary has studied, trained, and work shopped with teachers from across Canada and the US including National and International dance instructor Steve Smith of Kentucky. Her expertise has often been called upon to adjudicate for dance trials and competitions. Mary has worked relentlessly to promote and share her passion for dance not only in her community but wherever she travels. She confesses that to be a good instructor, you must never lose your own enthusiasm to learn, and firmly believes that communities can foster and promote, fun, fitness, co-operation and strong community values by using dance as the tool. Under her leadership her dancers have gained unparalleled popularity and recognition through their performances at Disney world, The Kennedy Space Centre, Rhythms Of The World in Toronto, The CN Tower, The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Harbour Festival;, Multi Cultural shows in Halifax and Ottawa, Rebecca Cohn and the Summer Festival Showcase to mention only a few. In October of 2006, Mary’s dancers traveled to Naples, Italy, where, along with thirteen other nations, danced at the International NATO Bazaar. They were proud ambassadors for Nova Scotia and Canada. Presently, they are preparing for five performances at the Canada - Cuba Sports and Cultural Festival in Cuba, March 2010. They take great pride in having opened shows for celebrities such as Terry Kelly, Wayne Rostad of “On The Road Again” , John Allen Cameron, the Alexander Brothers and Men Of The Deep.
